¡Chao, Uruguay!

Month 1 of my journey has come to a close. This past Saturday after spending 5 weeks in Uruguay I packed my bags and said chao to Uruguay.  (The do not say “Adios” here, but rather “Chao”)

The last couple of weeks were again filled with many adventures including a lettering workshop by one of my fellow remotes (homsweethom.com), photo scavenger hunt around the city, a fútbol game, beach parties with random photo shoots, a farewell party, birthday celebrations, and much more. Even though I have been battling a cold for 2 weeks I still loved my time there.

One thing that has hit me hard is my lack of Spanish skills. I hated it in the U.S. when someone needed to speak English in a certain circumstance but couldn’t. For example, I remember back in late fall I was at Subway in GR the customer ahead of me was ordering a sub but didn’t speak English so would just point to the veggies. I thought to myself now why would you go to a restaurant where you would have to speak repeatedly and not know the language. Well sure enough not too much later and I’m hanging in South America not knowing the language. I’m trying my best to pick up the language, but I still think back to the day last year. How embarrassed he was and how judgemental I was and now the roles are reversed and it is tough! But we have 3 more months of Spanish to master the language.

For the record I haven’t gone to Subway here for the reasoning above. However, I have gone to McDonalds because McNugget Combo is the same in English and Spanish just with a little accent.

Until next time, ¡Chao!
